SHARIAsource Senior Scholar Ahmed El Shamsy presented to a group of seven scholars on “Hair and Identity in Islamic and Jewish Law: Uncovering an Unlikely Link” during the March 20th ILSP: SHARIAsource Lunch Talk. His discussion looked at how male grooming practices were used by early Muslims to distinguish themselves from those of other communities, and what the textual and cultural sources of legitimacy were for using grooming practices as a mark of identity.
