Program in Islamic Law Celebrates Its New English Translation of al-Muwaṭṭaʾ

Earlier this fall, the Program in Islamic Law published the eighth volume in its Harvard Series on Islamic Law, an English translation of al-Muwaṭṭaʾ, the Royal Moroccan Edition, The Recension of Yaḥyā Ibn Yaḥyā al-Laythī. On December 9th, PIL celebrated the book’s launch by bringing together scholars from the accompanying online roundtable in a roundtable symposium and a public book talk. Convened by Professor Intisar Rabb (Harvard Law School) and Dr. Dana Lee (Harvard Law School), the events underscored the text’s historical and academic importance.  The author-translators, Professor Mohammad Fadel (University of Toronto) and Dr. Connell Monette (American College Casablanca), conferred with three panelists, Professor Kecia Ali (Boston University), Professor Ahmed El Shamsy (University of Chicago), and Dr. Mariam Sheibani (Harvard Law School). Minister Delegate Driss Ouaouicha and His Excellency Minister Ahmed Toufiq attended from Morocco, representing the international significance of the project.

Videos of the events will be made available on the PIL website. Al-Muwaṭṭa’s online companion is now available, where researchers can view historical maps and biographies that enrich understanding of the book. SNRT’s (Société Nationale de Radiodiffusion et de Télévision) broadcast of the events can be viewed below.

Congratulations to the entire team!
