PIL Fellowship Applications for 2020-2021 [Now Closed]

The Program in Islamic Law at Harvard Law School invites applications to its 2020-2021 Fellowship Program (due Jan. 31, 2020). Research Fellowships are designed to provide an intellectual home to promising young scholars in Islamic legal studies to advance their own research and to contribute to the intellectual life of the Program and the Harvard community. Successful applicants will have completed an advanced degree (JD, PhD, SJD or the equivalent) before the start of the fellowship, and plan to pursue a scholarly research agenda in Islamic law that engages legal history, law and society, or comparative law approaches. Fellows will receive stipends of $40,000 for an academic year. To apply for a Research Fellowship, please submit the following materials via the research fellowship online application form by January 31, 2020:

1) a curriculum vitae
2) a research statement, not to exceed 1000 words, that describes the applicant’s research background, interest in the Program, and proposed work during the fellowship period.
3) a recent publication or writing sample (not to exceed 25 pages in length, in English)
4) relevant law school or graduate school transcripts
5) at least 2 recommendation letters, uploaded directly by your recommenders at the referee link.

Fellows will spend the majority of their residency on their own research. They are also expected to participate in all the activities of the Program in Islamic Law, and help in organizing Program activities, and participate in the intellectual life of the law school and at Harvard University. Fellows are therefore expected to be in residence at Harvard throughout the term each semester.

This year, PIL also welcome applications for new Data Science Fellowships. Successful applicants for the Data Science Fellowships will have completed an advanced degree (MS, PhD, D.Eng.) in computer science or related field, and plan to pursue a CS project in digital humanities or data science related to Islamic historical or legal sources that can be completed in one semester or year. Examples include discrete projects in NLP, data visualization, and text-mining. To apply for a Program in Islamic Law Data Science Fellowship for 2020-2021, please submit the following materials via the data science fellowship online application form by January 31, 2020:

1) a curriculum vitae
2) a project proposal and statement of interest, not to exceed 1000 words, that describes the applicant’s computer science / data science or digital humanities background, interest in the Program, and proposed project during the fellowship period. Selected project proposals will be further developed in conjunction with Program faculty and staff
3) a sample of code or recent work from the applicant’s coding or design portfolio
4) a recent publication or writing sample (not to exceed 15 pages in length, in English)
5) at least 2 recommendation letters, uploaded directly by your recommenders at the referee link.
