On Islamic Law:

  • Nobuaki Kondo’s studies on Islamic law in Qajar Iran has been published in Persian.
  • In “The Immorality of Incarceration” (Journal of Islamic Law 3 no. 1 (2022)), Adnan Zulfiqar (Rutgers Law School) “shows how perspectives from the Global South, in this case Islamic law, might inform new approaches to abolition in other contexts.”
  • In “Shīʿī Ideas of Slavery” (Journal of Islamic Law 3 no. 1 (2022)), Zahra Azhar (Shahid Beheshti University) and Seyed Masoud Noori (NYU School of Law), with reference to Iranian history, “discuss[] and compare[] the opinions of Shīʿī scholars in the Qājar era, when the question of the abolition of slavery was first posed via British diplomatic channels, and subsequently during the Constitutional Revolution 1905 (Enghelāb-e Mashrūteh), to see if the introduction of Human Rights concepts at the time had any effect on fatwas about slave trade.”
  • In “Muslims in American Prisons” (Journal of Islamic Law 3 no. 1 (2022)), SpearIt. (University of Pittsburgh School of Law) “explores how Islamic ideals contributed to the litigation and how mundane lawsuits were transformed into an expression of genuine religiosity which, in turn, helped create new rules and policies that expanded the law’s presence in prison.”

On Islam and Data Science:

  • In “Inheritance Sharing System in Tinombala Village from the Perspective of Islamic Law” (International Journal of Contemporary Islamic Law and Society, 4 no. 1 (2022)), M. Taufan B. (Institut Agama Islam Negeri Palu) and others “use[] qualitative methods with three data collection techniques: observation, interviews, and documentation” to explore and discuss Islamic inheritance law practices in the Tinombala Village in Parigi Mautong Regency.
