ISLAMIC LAW IN THE NEWS

  • Muslim scholars have continued to issue a variety of legal opinions (fatwās) on the permissibility of cryptocurrencies under Islamic law, some deeming them permissible and some declaring them forbidden.   • A Malaysian defendant who “sought a declaration that the Kuala Lumpur Shariah High Court and Shariah Court of Appeal do not have jurisdiction to hear and punish any individual who contravenes the court,” arguing that “it is the exclusive right of the civil courts at the Federal Court,” had her motion rejected.
  • Frost and Sullivan, an American marketing research company, found that “[t]he halal economy market is expected to reach $4.96 trillion by 2030, as the demand for such products from Muslims and non-Muslims increases.”
  • Gulf states led by Saudi Arabia have threatened legal action against streaming group Netflix if it continues to broadcast shows they deem un-Islamic.”
  • The Sharī’a Court of Appeal in Nigeria held that “[a] Muslim man who contracted a registry marriage as his first marriage under the Marriage Act and wished to take a second wife for any reason or change his wife must first divorce his first wife.”

  • “As the world experiences conflict, supply chain disruptions and economic uncertainty, [h]alal finance provider Hejaz Financial Services report[ed] that the Islam finance sector is continuing to experience growth,” despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
