Call for Papers: Virtual Islamic Art History Seminar Series, Center for Middle Eastern Studies – Harvard University

August 16, 2020

Harvard University’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies is inviting proposals for paper presentations on topics related to the history of art, architecture, and visual culture of the Islamic world.

The virtual seminar series provides an opportunity for scholars to connect during a time when most of us are physically disconnected. It aims to give especially early- and mid-career scholars a platform to present their research and receive feedback, while also providing an opportunity to discuss current events and issues that affect our field. We are hoping to expand our understanding of Islamic art history and discuss those geographical areas and time periods that have previously been defined as marginal. While our current difficult circumstances have limited our lives in many ways, we believe that this time also provides an opportunity to connect in different ways and to include and pay attention to voices that have been heard less. This seminar series aims to bring together an international and intergenerational audience.

The virtual seminar series will take place bi-weekly from mid-September onwards. Each session will include a 20 min presentation followed by a 30 min discussion in a constructive and friendly manner. In addition to individual proposals we are also open to workshop proposals.

If you are interested, please send an abstract detailing your topic (not more than 1000 words) and your CV or resume by Sunday, August 16, 2020, to Dr Melis Taner (melis.taner@ozyegin.edu.tr) and Dr Mira Xenia Schwerda (miraschwerda@g.harvard.edu). Please include information about your location and time zone in your email as we will have to find a time that works well for most participants
