Princeton Lecture: Shariah at the University (Khaled Abou El Fadl)

What is Shariah’s place in American intellectual life? What role can academics and academic institutions play in public discussions of this contentious topic? In this lecture, Dr. Abou El Fadl will offer his analysis, informed by decades of research and teaching on Islamic law, on the past, present, and future of the study of Shariah in America. Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl *99 is the Omar and Azmeralda Alfi Distinguished Professor in Islamic Law at the UCLA School of Law, and the Deputy Chair of the Islamic Studies Interdepartmental Program at UCLA. He is a leading authority on Shariah, Islamic law, and Islam, and a prominent scholar in the field of human rights. He is the author of numerous books and articles, including his most recent book, Reasoning with God: Reclaiming Shari’ah in the Modern Age.

This event has been organized by an interdisciplinary group of graduate students, with the generous sponsorship of: Department of Near Eastern Studies, Program in Near Eastern Studies, Humanities Council, Religion Department, Center for Collaborative History, Center for the Study of Religion, and Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies.

The event will be followed by light refreshments.
