Jocelyn Hendrickson is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and History at the University of Alberta (Canada). Her research focuses on Islamic legal history in the medieval and early modern Islamic West (al-Andalus, North and West Africa), especially through the analysis of legal opinions (fatwās). Her 2016 article, “Prohibiting the Pilgrimage: Politics and Fiction in Mālikī Fatwās” was recently named one of the top 15 articles published in the 25-year history of Islamic Law and Society. Hendrickson’s first monograph, Leaving Iberia: Islamic Law and Christian Conquest in North West Africa, is forthcoming with the Harvard Series in Islamic Law.
