SUMMARY:Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Fellowships
DESCRIPTION:Two Visiting Fellowships (October 2019 to June 2020) are available to support research in any discipline within the arts\, humanities and social sciences relevant to the study of Islam or Muslim societies\, without restriction to any period or region.\nPost-doctoral or equivalent level academics may apply. However\, these posts are normally taken by academics with an established record in their discipline.\nThese Fellowships carry a stipend of £5000. Visiting Fellows are expected to devote their time to research and writing and to participate in the Centre’s academic activities.\nThe application deadline is January 13\, 2019.\nSee flyer here\n\n  \n\nApplications are also invited for a Visiting Fellowship under a Scholar in Residence Programme in Islamic Finance\, jointly supported by the Centre and the Securities Commission Malaysia.\nApplicants must be specialists in Islamic Finance and/or a closely related discipline\, preferably with practical experience of policy-making with an international or comparative component.\nThe Visiting Fellow will be expected to conduct research on a topic of contemporary relevance to the field and to participate in a range of academic activities at Oxford. The tenure of the Visiting Fellowship is for one academic year (with candidates being considered for the year commencing October 2019). SUMMARY:Call for Applications: Bodleian Libraries Fellowships in the Persian Arts of the Book
DESCRIPTION:Applications are invited for Fellowships of up to 6 months\, for research into the Persian Arts of the Book. Research areas may include but are not limited to studies in Art History\, Codicology\, Calligraphy\, Miniature Painting\, the History of Islamic Book Production and Scribal Practices\, Manuscript Cataloguing\, and the Editing and Translation of Texts. Academics or university staff of at least postdoctoral level or equivalent (e.g.\, holding a curatorial post in a museum or library) are welcome to apply. The main focus of any research proposal should be on an aspect or aspects of the Bodleian’s Persian and Islamic Collections. Applications should include details of the Collections to be consulted and of the larger project that the research visit will support\, including planned outcomes. DESCRIPTION:University of Oxford\nFaculty of Oriental Studies\nPost-doctoral Researchers in Qur’anic Studies (2 posts)\nFour-year fixed term contract\nGrade 7: £31\,604 to £38\,833 p.a.\, full time \nThis is an opportunity for outstanding scholars to join the research project Qur’anic Commentary: An Integrative Paradigm (QuCIP)\, funded by the European Research Council and directed by Nicolai Sinai. The particular responsibilities of these posts are to carry out research on (i) the Islamic reception history of surahs 1–4\, or (ii) Qur’anic law in its late antique context; and in both cases to author a monograph on the topic. The positions are scheduled to commence in April 2019\, although an earlier start date is possible if desired. \nFor position (i) the Researcher will undertake a detailed examination of medieval and modern Islamic commentaries and other primary sources relevant to the interpretation of surahs 1–4.  For position (ii) the Researcher will undertake a detailed examination of legal and quasi-legal passages in the Qur’an\, reviewing and refining our understanding of their meaning and historical context in light of pertinent pre-Qur’anic traditions.  In each case this will involve managing his/her research using and developing appropriate methodologies\, and drawing on pertinent scholarship from other disciplines as required.  She/he will contribute to the preparation of workshops and conferences\, present papers at conferences or public meetings\, and liaise as appropriate with colleagues and research groups at other institutions. She/he will author a monograph based on his/her research and collaborate in the preparation of the project’s other publications\, as well as acting as a source of information and advice to other members of the project.  She/he will develop ideas for potential further funding applications related to Qur’anic Studies\, and liaise as appropriate with colleagues and research groups at other institutions.  The Researcher may be asked to deliver up to an average of 1h of classes\, lectures\, or small-group (tutorial) teaching per week of term in the field of Qur’anic Studies or some other subfield of Islamic Studies. \nHolding a relevant PhD/DPhil by the start of the position\, the successful candidate will possess a very good command of Qur’anic and classical Arabic.  Applicants for post (i) must have very good literacy in pre-modern Islamic religious scholarship\, and for post (ii) must be familiar with pre-modern Islamic religious scholarship and be able to work with late antique Jewish and Christian primary sources relevant to the study of Qur’anic law\, either in the original (preferred) or in translation.  In both cases this must be coupled with specialist knowledge of the discipline of Qur’anic Studies.  She/he must be able to undertake innovative research at the forefront of current Qur’anic scholarship\, managing his/her own academic research and associated activities.  Previous experience of independent scholarly writing to a high level of content and presentation is essential\, as are the ability to contribute ideas for new research projects and excellent communication skills\, including the ability to write for publication\, present research proposals and results\, and represent the research group at meetings.  For position (i)\, applicants with previous scholarly publications and/or literacy in a relevant primary language other than Arabic\, such as Persian or Urdu\, may be at an advantage\, although these are desirable rather than essential accomplishments.  For position (ii)\, candidates with previous scholarly publications and a good command of relevant primary languages other than Arabic (especially Biblical and Rabbinic Hebrew\, Rabbinic Aramaic\, and Syriac) will be at an advantage \nThese are a full-time fixed term positions\, for four years.\nFor further details\, and to apply for either of these positions\, visit https://www.ox.ac.uk/about/jobs/index.html\nClosing date is 12 noon\, 14 September 2018.  Vacancy reference 135887/135888.

DESCRIPTION:University of Oxford\nFaculty of Oriental Studies\nInstructor in Arabic\n£28\,098 – £33\,518 per annum\, full time\nTwo posts: one permanent appointment\, one fixed term appointment for five years \nWe are looking for two committed and highly effective Instructors in Arabic\, to commence on 1 October 2018.  The Instructors will give instruction in Arabic language to undergraduate and graduate students\, and undertake administration\, course development and examining when required.  One post is permanent\, while the other is a five year fixed term position covering the secondment of a colleague to a major research project. \nFor both posts\, the Instructor will give approximately 16 hours of teaching in language classes each week during the University’s term\, including instruction in Arabic language at all levels for undergraduate and graduate degree programmes; reading classes for modern and pre-modern texts (literary\, historical and socio-cultural); and familiarisation of students with contemporary Arabic media.  The Instructor will develop teaching materials for these programmes\, and will examine for undergraduate and graduate degrees.  She/he will also help students prepare for their study year abroad\, and may assist with the practical arrangements for this\, as well as with the administration of courses or other aspects of the work of the Arabic\, Persian and Turkish Subject Group. \nThe successful candidates will have a native or equivalent command of Arabic and an equivalent command of English.  They will demonstrate a commitment to dynamic and effective language teaching\, and have experience teaching Arabic as a foreign language in a university or equivalent higher educational institution.  Ideally the candidates will also have completed a first degree or postgraduate qualification in Arabic language\, language pedagogy or applied linguistics (or another relevant field in which Arabic language forms the focus)\, and be able to teach an Arabic dialect. \nClosing date for applications is 1 August 2018.  For further details\, and to apply for these posts\, visit https://www.ox.ac.uk/about/jobs/index.html.  Please note that all applications will automatically be considered for both posts unless the applicant indicates otherwise\, so only one application needs to be submitted.
