Call for Applications: Graduate Student & Early Career Workshop, The Law and Society Association

We welcome applications from students in graduate/doctoral programs in the social sciences, humanities, and law, as well as early career scholars who received their highest degree after 1 May 2019, including post-doctoral fellows, adjunct faculty, and pre-tenure faculty. Preference will be given to doctoral candidates and early career faculty. Especially where career breaks exist due to family obligations, eligibility will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Equity, diversity, and inclusion as well as representation of the Global South are priorities for the workshop.

The goal of this workshop is to provide a safe and welcoming space for mentoring and peer mentoring among a diverse group of early career law and society scholars. The LSA seeks to build intellectual community among each new generation of law and society scholars and to promote constructive dialogue about research projects.

The workshop will occur in-person on May 31, 2023 at the Hilton Caribe in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and consists of two programming tracks during the day:

Part I: Small group meetings to workshop papers

Participants will be assigned to small groups, each with a faculty mentor. The focus of the group meeting will be giving and receiving feedback on participants’ scholarly papers.

Part II: Professional development sessions and networking

Participants will attend sessions on professionalization topics, such as applying for jobs, publishing in academic journals, and applying for research funding. Participants will also be given the opportunity to network with other participants through meals and informal discussion.

Each participant will be required to circulate to their small group members ahead of the in-person meeting, a draft of a paper, chapter, or proposal/prospectus on which they wish to receive feedback from other participants. Participants should be prepared to engage in intensive discussion of their own paper and the papers of their other group members. The workshop aims to expose participants to diverse styles, theoretical innovations, and international publishing practices in law and society.

LSA will provide stipends of $750 USD for participants accepted into the workshop.  Participants will be expected to register separately for the LSA Annual Meeting.

Applications are due November 15, 2022. Successful applicants will be notified in early January, 2023.

In addition to completing the online application form, please combine the following three documents, in the following order, into a single PDF file. Submit all documents in English and label the attachment as “Last Name 2023.pdf.”

• Letter of interest (1 page) describing your research interests, current career stage (including year in graduate school/faculty position), career goals, and what you hope to get out of and contribute to the workshop.  Please also indicate whether you are a member of LSA.

• Abstract (1 page) of your draft paper, chapter, or proposal/prospectus on which you wish to receive feedback from other participants. The abstract should describe the research question(s), theoretical framework, methods & data sources, and contribution to the field.

• Curriculum vitae/resume (maximum 2-3 pages)
