Call for Papers: Annual Meeting, Middle East Studies Association

August 18, 2020

Middle East Studies Association

We invite MESA members to submit special sessions to supplement the annual meeting program through presentations that are of broad interest across disciplines, and may also include submissions based on current events. Their unique and compelling nature should set them apart from other submission categories. Only a limited number of sessions will be granted special status on the program.

Special Sessions Submission Instructions

  1. MESA members are welcome to propose special sessions in writing by submitting a proposal to Kat Kassanitz (kat@mesana.org) by Tuesday, August 18, 11:59 PM MST.

  2. The proposal should include the following:
    1. Proposal summary: In-depth information on the proposed topic. The proposal summary should be between 300-400 words and exhibit a clear, scholarly focus with a well-defined description of the overall purpose of the panel.

b.      List of presenters, with abstracts of individual topics. Each abstract should also be fewer than 400 words in length; 200-300 words is typically sufficient to articulate the significance of each presenter’s individual contribution.

c.      A statement explaining why the session deserves special status on the MESA program.

  1. The letter will be shared with a subcommittee of MESA’s Board of Directors and others, as deemed appropriate.
  2. Current issue and late-breaking special session proposals must reach the MESA Secretariat by August 18, 2020.

MESA Call for Papers Participation Rules to Keep in Mind:
  1. You may only participate in two sessions.

To clarify, you may be a presenter and/or a chair, discussant, or organizer on the same panel which you are presenting your paper while still participating in another session. But a person may only participate in a total of two sessions.

  2. MESA membership is a requirement to submit a proposal, and required of all presenters should the proposal be accepted.

Membership Exemption

We grant waivers to the membership requirement only if you have never previously participated in a MESA meeting, and you are either not based in North America or attempting a cross-area comparative proposal. For more details, or to apply for an exemption request, click here.

Questions should be directed to Kat Kassanitz, MESA’s Meeting Planner & Conference Coordinator (kat@mesana.org).
