Short Course: Introduction to Arabic Manuscript Studies

Dates: June 1-5, 2020 (students arrive May 31)

Schedule: 9am – 3:30pm each day

Location: Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (HMML), Collegeville, Minnesota

Course Objectives:

  • Introduce participants to the study and handling of Arabic manuscripts
  • Provide basic introduction to paleography, codicology and philological practices
  • Engage with printed and digital scholarly tools for the study of Arabic manuscripts (catalogues/ handlists/ inventories, dedicated handbooks, online resources)
  • Introduce participants to a range of Arabic manuscripts from West Africa and the Middle East, both Islamic and Christian

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of Arabic language

Eligibility: Course open to graduate students, advanced undergraduates, faculty, and independent scholars with a research interest in Arabic manuscripts

Instructors:

LUCIA RAGGETTI graduated in the faculty of Arabo-Islamic Studies at the University of Naples “L’Orientale”, where she also defended her PhD in Near Eastern and Maghreb Studies. Currently, she is assistant professor for the history of Islamic science at the University of Bologna, and contributor to the ERC Project, AlchemEast.

ALI DIAKITE completed his PhD at the École Normale Supérieure in Lyon, France, on west African intellectual life in the 19th century. A native speaker of Arabic, Fulfulde, and Bambara, Diakite completed his MA work in Arabic Studies at the Université de Bamako, Mali. He has contributed to the West African Arabic Manuscripts Microfilm Project (MMAP) and is currently an Associate Cataloger for West African Manuscripts at the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library.

DAVID CALABRO holds a PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago. He specializes in Semitic philology and premodern Middle Eastern cultural history. He has taught courses on Near Eastern languages and literature at Brigham Young University and Saint John’s University. Calabro is the Curator of Eastern Christian and Islamic Manuscripts at the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library.

Course Venue: The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library, on the campus of Saint John’s University, Collegeville, Minnesota holds a teaching collection of rare books and manuscripts and houses the world’s largest collection of manuscript images on its digital library, vHMML.org – including large collections of Arabic Christian manuscripts and West African manuscripts from Timbuktu.
