On Tuesday September 21 we continue with the cycle dedicated to the ‘sharia’ with this conference by Carmelo Pérez Beltrán, Professor of Arab and Islamic Studies of the Department of Semitic Studies of the University of Granada. It can be seen on our YouTube channel and on Facebook Live .
The objective of this conference is to check the degree of influence that Islamic Law has on the Moroccan Family Code ( Mudawwana ) and to see its evolution over the years, focusing especially on issues that involve greater inequality or discrimination. towards women. To do this, we will begin by talking about the first Code of Personal Status adopted between 1956 and 1957, shortly after Morocco achieved its independence, to later influence the brief reform of 1993 and end the main contributions of the current Family Code, dating from 2004. In addition to legal issues, the main ideological debates about the place that Sharia should occupy within this legislation as a theoretical and legal reference will also be presented.
Carmelo Pérez Beltrán is Professor of Arab and Islamic Studies in the Department of Semitic Studies at the University of Granada. Likewise, he is coordinator of the Contemporary Arab Studies Research Group, director of the magazine Miscelneanea de Estudios Árabes y Hebraicos. Arab-Islam Section and director of the Emilio García Gómez Chair at the same university. Specialized in sociology of the contemporary Arab world, his main line of research is the study of civil society, human rights and democratic processes in the Maghreb, with special interest in the social and legal status of women and in the legislative changes that have taken place after the so-called Arab Spring.
