Islam and the Modern International Legal Order

The world is awash in ethnic nationalist movements that maintain that local values and local institutions serve the populations of their respective communities best. But is there truly an unmanageable tension between a preference for a particular political arrangement and a willingness to subject the state to a higher order set of rules that governs relationships between states? This question is hardly new to Islam, which is both traditionally universalist yet aware of the necessity of managing relationships with others. Our panel will discuss these questions and others, primarily through the lens of recent scholarship on the subject.
