Position opening: University Professor of Islamic Studies (Classical Islam), the Free University of Berlin

The successful applicant will cover research and teaching in the field of Islamic studies (classical Islam).
Appointment requirements are governed by Section 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz – BerIHG).
Successful candidates will have an excellent record of research and publications in the field of classical Islam, ideally with a focus on the social, cultural, religious, or philosophical history of Islam and employ innovative theoretical and methodological approaches. Applicants should have relevant experience in teaching at university level and in international research. They should also have experience in acquiring and leading externally funded research projects. Candidates must have excellent knowledge of English and be able to teach in that language. Their German language level must be at least B1 (according to the CEFR scale). Their Arabic must also be excellent. Knowledge of an additional Near Eastern language relevant to the field is desirable.
Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Section 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:
The new professor will be expected to contribute to research and teaching partnerships at Freie Universität as well as within the Berlin-Brandenburg region (for example, the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies, potentially relevant Clusters of Excellence, and collaborative projects within the context of the Berlin University Alliance). They should also be willing to work on the expansion and intensification of international research projects. Furthermore, they will be expected to address gender and diversity issues in their teaching and research. They are expected to teach in German within three years.
