Salzburg Seminar / Cutler Fellows in International Law: Call for Applications

Harvard Law School is accepting applications for the 2018 Salzburg Lloyd N. Cutler Fellows Program.  Up to five students will be selected to participate.  The Salzburg Cutler Fellows Program brings together 55 of the nation’s top law students with leading academics, judges, and practitioners in the fields of private and public international law.  The two-day program examines the most critical issues shaping today’s international law agenda and creates a network of women and men interested in careers in international legal practice and public service.

At the heart of the program is the preparation by each Fellow of an article-length paper by graduation.  At the conference itself, a preliminary draft of the paper or a 5-8 page executive summary will be circulated to other program participants.  Each Fellow’s project will receive feedback from other similarly-interested participants and law professors / practitioners.

On Day 1 (Friday, Feb. 23) Small group sessions, led by faculty, discuss and provide suggestions for each student paper.   Short talks, panels, and networking opportunities are interspersed, featuring eminent practitioners.  A dinner will be held on Friday evening.

On Day 2 (Saturday, Feb. 24) Saturday’s program is devoted to career-related discussions, with opportunities for fellows to meet with practitioners from different fields of international law.  The program finishes by early afternoon.

What is the Cost? Harvard Law School will cover the cost of transportation and one night of accommodation in Washington, D.C.  Meals will be provided by the Salzburg Global Seminar.

Who Can Apply? This program is open to 2L and 3L students, as well as LL.M. and S.J.D. students.  Students with a strong desire to pursue a career related to international law are particularly encouraged to apply.  Preference is given to J.D. students, especially those in their 2L year.  A maximum of five HLS students will be nominated.

Tuesday, January 9 at noon.  

• a cover letter explaining your background and interest in the Salzburg Cutler Program
• unofficial transcript (Note: LL.M. students should provide a list of their 1^st semester classes & professors)
• resume or CV
• a copy of the draft paper or a 5-8 page executive summary of the project that you would like to present

Please note the name of your faculty supervisor for your project on the paper itself or in your cover letter.

Projects should generally fit in one of these major areas:

i) humanitarian law, human rights, and use of force,

ii) international economic, investment and monetary law,

iii)binternational trade, anti-corruption and anti-trust,

iv) international institutions and international relations, and

v) rule of law and comparative constitutionalism.

Selection is based on a combination of commitment to international law and academic promise.  Students are encouraged to submit articles or papers in development for other purposes  (e.g., seminar papers, independent study, law review notes, LL.M. long paper).  Articles / papers should be academically-oriented.  The draft submitted can be incomplete.
