The professorship is located at the Institute for Islamic Studies.

Requirements

The Institute for Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies seeks a scholar with the ability to cover the entire field in teaching. A research profile situated within the fields of history, cultural or social studies with a temporal focus on the 20th and 21st centuries is expected. The geographical focus should lie on the Arab world and complement the areas already covered at the department. Required are excellent knowledge of Arabic, familiarity with current theoretical approaches and research stays in the region.

Depending on the qualifications of the successful applicant, the employment will be either as an assistant professor (with tenure-track), as an associate professor or as a full professor. For the hiring of an assistant professor an outstanding dissertation and an advanced new research project preparing the habilitation is expected. Candidates for an associate or full professorship are required to have obtained the habilitation or an equivalent qualification. The language of instruction and administration at the University of Bern is German. Applicants are expected to acquire a good working knowledge of German within two years.
