IN SUMMARY :: SHARIAsource at the Agha Khan Conference on Media and Muslim Contexts (London, 2016)

Paul Beran, SHARIAsource Executive Director, participated earlier this month in a conference on Media in Muslim Contexts: Inventing and Reinventing Identities, hosted by the Aga Khan University (AKU) in London, UK from 3-4 November 2016. This conference examined the media landscape as it pertains to Muslims largely in the Middle East region. Speakers from the academy and practitioners in media presented a variety of perspectives relating to media criticism, law, anthropology, political science, and cultural studies. Among  the presenters were satirists, investigative journalists, legal professionals, and faculty from institutions in higher education, from around Europe, North America, the Middle East and Africa. The Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilizations (ISMC), the academic arm of AKU that co-hosted the program, approached the discussion from a developing world perspective, and from situations largely outside of the West. This approach helped to situate discussions on a range of topics from unique perspectives. Proceedings from the conference will be published at a later date.
