SCHOLARSHIP ROUNDUP
On Islamic Law
- In “The Role and Potential of Blockchain Technology in Islamic Finance” (European Business Law Review 33, no. 2 (2022)), Andrew Dahdal, Jon Druby, and Otabek Ismailov (Qatar University) “argue that blockchain has the ability to mediate and harmonise differing shariacompliance regimes thus opening up a single digital market for Islamic financial products and services.”
- In “Islam and International Criminal Law: The Question of Complementarity and Ijtihad” (OpinioJuris (November 28, 2022)), Fajri Matahati Muhammadin (Universitas Gadjah Mada) argues that “a traditionalist approach to Islamic law would necessitate the criminalization of many (but not all) acts considered war crimes in the Rome Statute via ta’zir or ruler discretionary punishments.”
- In “The tragedy of the Taliban’s interpretation of Islam” (Rukhshana Media (December 1, 2022)), Amin Mohammadi points out that “misunderstandings of Islam and the Taliban’s absurd and harmful interpretation of it have cast [a] long shadow, especially on the lives of girls.”
On Islam and Data Science
- “According to the 2022 Illinois Muslims Report, 94 percent of Muslims in Illinois observe halal guidelines, and Illinois has the largest per capita population of Muslims in the U.S. The report found that 39 percent of Muslim respondents with school-age children, along with 32 percent of students enrolled in college, lack access to halal food at their school.”
