Weekend Scholarship Roundup

SCHOLARSHIP ROUNDUP

On Islamic Law:

  • In “The Textual Evolution of the Ottoman Şeyhülislams’ Fetvas: A Cross-Corpora Computational Analysis” (Der Islam 98, no. 2 (2021)), Bogac Ergene (The University of Vermont) and Atabey Kaygun (Istanbul Technical University) “use a mix of computational techniques to identify textual shifts in the Ottoman şeyhülislams’ fetvas between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries.”
  • In “Compatibility between Modern IHL and Principles of Islamic Law of Conduct of War: A Comparative Analysis” (Islamabad Law Review 5, nos. 1-2 (2021)), Humna Sohail (International Islamic University, Islamabad) argues that “balancing effort between the military necessity and humanity” – a core tenet of international humanitarian law has a firmly-rooted history in Islamic law.
  • In Understanding Sharia Processes: Women’s Experiences of Family Disputes (Hart Publishing, 2021), Farrah Ahmed (Melbourne Law School) and Ghena Krayem (The University of Sydney) respond to the commonly-held notion that sharī’a family law processes in liberal legal systems put Muslim women at a disadvantage by focusing on Muslim women in Australia and their use of Islamic family law procedures and processes.

On Islam and Data Science:

FIELD GUIDE TO ISLAMIC LAW ONLINE: RECENT SOURCES

This Field Guide to Islamic Law Online is an ever-growing collection of links to hundreds of links to primary sources and archival collections around the world, online. We recently added new resources to this list:

  • Digital Library of Astan-e Quds-e Razavi is a digital library containing books, manuscripts, and databases in Farsi.
  • Afghanistan Digital Library is a digital library whose objective is “to retrieve and restore the first sixty years of Afghanistan’s published cultural heritage. The project is collecting, cataloging, digitizing, and making available over the Internet as many Afghan publications from the period 1871–1930 as it is possible to identify and locate. In addition to books, this will eventually include all published serials, documents, pamphlets, and manuals.”
