On Islamic Law

  • In “Law, Society, and Religion: Islam and the West” (U. of Pittsburgh Legal Studies Research Paper No. 2023-28), Paolo Davide Farah (University of Pittsburgh) observes that “Islam is one of those that holds a great importance; it constitutes the world’s fastest growing religion, and it creates social and political rules that regulate its followers’ conduct.”
  • In “Jihadism in the Italian Prison System: Some Critical Notes” (SSRN, July 21, 2023), Giancarlo Anello (University of Parma) takes issue with the notion that “[t]he words ‘jihād’ and ‘jihādism’ in the Italian language are often used as synonymous and associated with the phenomenon of radicalization of detainees in the prison system.”
  • In “Al Hassan Symposium – ‘Islam Itself Is Not on Trial’: Culture and Religion in Al Hassan” (Lieber Institute, July 31, 2023), Julie Fraser (Netherlands Institute of Human Rights) unpacks the case of The Prosecutor v. Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud pending before the International Criminal Court, arguing that the case requires the ICC judges to acquaint themselves with, among others, Islamic law.
