On Islamic Law:
- In “Judicial Crisis in Damascus on the Eve of Baybars’s Reform: The Case of the Minor Orphan Girl (651–55/1253–57)” (Islamic Law and Society (March 23, 2022)), Mariam Sheibani (The University of Toronto Scarborough) “reconstructs a late-Ayyubid court case in Damascus that was litigated repeatedly between 651/1253 and 655/1257, five years prior to the beginning of Sultan Baybars’s judicial reform in 660/1262.”
- In “The Islamic Law of Pearling: Ritual Obligation and Economic Practice in the Arabian Gulf, ca. 1910–1940” (Islamic Law and Society (April 21, 2022)), Alexandre Caeiro (Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar) explores how pearling, the main economic activity in the Arabian Gulf in the early 20th century, was regulated by Islamic law, and its links to an emerging capitalist world.
- In “The Four Books of Shiʿi Hadith: From Inception to Consolidation” (Islamic Law and Society (November 30, 2021)), Amin Ehteshami (Humboldt University) historically traces the origins and consolidation of the major books of Prophetic sayings in the Shī’ī tradition.
- In “The Birth of the Islamic Investor: Shareholding, Modern Islamic Law, and the Rise of Islamic Finance” (Islamic Law and Society (March 23, 2022)), Ibrahim Elhoudaiby (Columbia University) “explore[s] the genealogy of Islamic finance by scrutinizing twentieth-century fatwās on share certificates.”
- In “Rebelling against the Ruler: Egyptian Youth and Azhari Scholars’ Authority after the 2011 Uprising” (Islamic Law and Society (August 26, 2021)), Nareman Amin (Princeton University) discusses the fatāwā of Muslim scholars during the Arab spring uprisings.
- In “Sexualization of Sharīʿa: Application of Islamic Criminal (Ḥudūd) Laws in Pakistan)” (Islamic Law and Society (June 17, 2021)), Zubair Abbasi (Lahore University of Management Sciences) explores the increase and decrease in the number of zinā prosecutions under the various laws in Pakistan that have regulated sex crimes according to Islamic law.
- Awraq, a Spanish-language publication, dedicated its recent issue to the theme La shari‘a o ley sagrada de los musulmanes (The shari’a or sacred law of Muslims sacred law of Muslims), which features an essay by our Editor-in-Chief, Professor Intisar Rabb titled Crimen y castigo en el islam: principios y prácticas (Crime and punishment in Islam: principles and practices).
- In “Withholding religious divorce controlling and coercive behavior: Moher” (Law and Religion UK, May 17, 2022), Fouzia Azzouz (Bristol University) “looks at the law around a husband’s refusal to grant his wife a religious divorce.”
On Islam and Data Science:
- In “Islamic school leadership: advancing a framework for critical spirituality” (International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education 35, no. 3 (2022)), Melanie C. Brooks (Monash University) and Miriam D. Ezzani (Texas Christian University) explore “how an Islamic school leader’s critical spirituality informed and shaped leadership practice,” using data “collected via semi-structured interviews, documents, and school site observations.”

- Princeton Geniza Project consists of 4,320 transcriptions in Judaeo-Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic and Arabic.
- The Friedberg Geniza Project is the biggest collection of digitized geniza fragments, especially documentary fragments.
