Weekend Scholarship Roundup

SCHOLARSHIP ROUNDUP

On Islamic Law

  • In “The use of Cayman Islands structures in Islamic real estate financings in the UK” (JD Supra, November 14, 2023), Walkers attorneys outline how Islamic law-compliant transaction structures such as murābaḥa are used to fund the acquisition of UK real estate.
  • In “Taking a look at Shariah-compliant investment funds” (FootAnstey, November 17, 2023), Karl Bradford and Zahir Nayani observe “a rise in interest in the establishment of Shariah-compliant funds both on a ‘standalone’ basis as well as to be parallel to or as feeder vehicles into conventional funds.”
  • In “The Challenge of ‘Halal Lifestyle’ and Occupational Preferences in Indonesia” (Yusof Ishak Institute, November 15, 2023) Iim Halimatusa’diyah (Islamic State University, Indonesia) and Wahyudi Akmaliah (Ph.D. candidate, National University of Singapore) find that three sectors in Indonesia are the most salient when it comes to reported difficulties by respondents to reconcile their commitment to abiding by Islamic law on the one hand and performing well in their vocations on the other: “three specific employment industries—entertainment, finance, and MultiLevel Marketing (MLM)—are considered contentious, with varying interpretations of their alignment as a ‘halal occupation.'”

On Islam and Data Science

  • Digitalization in Halal Management, ed. Ahmad Rafiki (Universitas Medan Area, Medan, Indonesia) (Springer, 2023), provides “approaches and ways in halal management and digitalization,” “[p]resents theories and cases on halal management and information technology,” and “[p]rovides comprehensive and detail[ed] content on halal products and industries.”
