SCHOLARSHIP ROUNDUP
On Islamic Law
- In “Honoring JURIST’s Publisher Emeritus: Championing Comparative and International Law and a Legacy of Legal Insight” (Jurist, February 20, 2025), Mohamed ‘Arafa (Alexandria University Faculty of Law, Egypt) reflects on the scholarly impact of Bernard Hibbitts: “Bernie has been a staunch supporter of my work in the field of comparative Islamic law, encouraging me to explore and contribute to the growing body of literature on this important subject. For the past few years, I have had the privilege of writing on the intersections of Islamic law and Western legal systems for JURIST, with his invaluable guidance and support. Through our discussions, I’ve been able to compare the evolving concepts within Islamic legal thought with various principles of the American legal system, offering fresh insights into the complexities of both legal traditions.”
- In “Exploring Criminal Punishments: A Comparative Review of Islamic and Indonesian Law” (Fuqaha: Journal of Islamic Law 1, no. 1 (2025)), Sumardi Efendi (Sekolah Tinggi Agama Islam Negeri Teungku Dirundeng Meulaboh, Indonesia) and others “compare[] criminal punishments between Islamic and Indonesian criminal law, focusing on similarities and differences, causal factors, and impacts.”
- In “Islamic Law Perspectives and Social Experiences on Stigma Towards Disabled People in Indonesia” (Frontiers in Sociology 10 (2025)), Muktashim Billah (Muhammadiyah University of Makassar, Makassar, Indonesia) and others “explore[] the stigmatization of disabled people in Indonesia, particulary in Makassar, through the lens of Islamic law (Maqāṣid al-Sharī’ah) and societal interactions.”
On Islam and Data Science
On Islam and AI/Data Science
- In “Artificial intelligence and Islamic finance industry: problems and oversight” (International Journal of Law and Management, February 24, 2025) Ifan Arsyad (Department of Business Law, Fakultas Hukum, Universitas Sebelas Maret, Surakarta, Indonesia) and others argue that “current regulations, including the Islamic Banking Law and Insurance Law, do not adequately address AI. Moreover, the use of AI raises concerns about Shariah compliance, particularly about transparency and possible algorithmic bias in the decision-making process.”
