Philippe Gelez has been a university professor at Sorbonne University since 2017, specializing in the political, economic and cultural history of Bosnia-Herzegovina in the modern and contemporary eras. After a biographical monograph on Safvet-beg Bašagić, the father of national thought among Muslims in this country, he studied the issue of Islamization in the Balkans and then focused on the agrarian history of Ottoman and post-Ottoman Bosnia. In this vein, he defended his habilitation thesis in 2016 and is working on the Ottoman Land Code of 1858 and its repercussions in Bosnia-Herzegovina, but also throughout the Ottoman Empire.
