  • Indonesian authorities sentenced Islamic cleric Habib Rizieq to eight months of imprisonment for encouraging people to attend mass gatherings amid the pandemic.
  • The Indonesian government, citing concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, announced that it was cancelling all pilgrimages to Mecca for the second year in a row.
  •  Saudi Arabian authorities announced that during this year’s pilgrimage machines would be used to the extent possible to ensure social distancing and for a variety of different activities, including distributing bottles of holy water to pilgrims.
  • A study by Reuters found that Muslims in France have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic compared to other communities and that the COVID death rate among French Muslims is much higher than in the total population.
