  • In Religion and Contract Law in Islam: From Medieval Trade to Global Finance (Routledge, 2023), Valentino Cattelan (Birmingham City University), “[u]ndertaking a search that spans revelation, legal tradition, and the reality of the Muslim world, […] explores the Islamic contract (‘aqd in Arabic) as a ‘city’ at the crossroads of convergent paths of translation, comparison, and law in context.”
  • In “Islamic Jihadism and the Laws of War” (Lieber Institute, September 25, 2023), Omar Mekky (ICRC) argues that “we can certainly contribute toward the response to Islamic jihadism if we manage to engage in a constructive dialogue between international law and Islamic law, including all its diverse interpretations.”
  • In “Understanding Sharia transactions” (DLA Piper, May 17, 2023), Ehab Elsonbaty and Samara Yousif (DLA Piper) outline what they refer to as the benefits of doing business that involves the application of Islamic law, listing savings, risk avoidance, stability and economic progress among those benefits.

On Islam and Data Science

  • In “Islamic Law, Disability, and Women in Indonesia: The Cases of Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah” (Journal of Disability & Religion, September 9, 2023), Arif Maftuhin (The State Islamic University of Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta, Indonesia) complements his study of fatwās issued by two prominent Indonesian Islamic organizations on the question of women with disabilities with field research and interviews, concluding that “[t]hey [i.e., the fatwās] leave room for developing a more women-friendly” jurisprudence.
