ISLAMIC LAW IN THE NEWS
- Police in Nigeria arrested 76 people alleged to have attended a same-sex marriage ceremony prohibited by the country’s laws. A regional police officer declined to comment whether charges would be brought against the attendees under Islamic law or federal law.
- Boston University recently announced the opening of “The Halal Shack” in its food court. School officials commented that the new eatery was opened partly to meet the demands of members of the BU community who opted for food that “adheres to Islamic law.”
- Sedigheh Vasmaghi, an Iranian religious scholar and activist, recently stated that Iran‘s mandatory hijab law should be abolished.

- “An Iranian court has sentenced a woman to death for committing adultery after a man complained to the police when he found out his wife was having an affair.” The case was reported as being subject to appeal. - “A sharia court in northern Nigeria has sentenced eight men to 10 lashes for cross-dressing, an act it said contradicts Islamic law, according to court papers.”
- The UAE Council for Fatwa’s International Conference, scheduled to begin its deliberations this Tuesday, will discuss the permissibility under Islamic law of a variety of practices, including transplanting pig’s heart into human body, feeding infants through milk banks, and autonomous robots.
