On Islamic Law

• In Muslim Prisoner Litigation: An Unsung American Tradition (University of California Press, 2023), SpearIt (University of Pittsburgh School of Law) explores how, “Islamic principles of justice and equality […] have played a critical role in safeguarding the civil rights not only of imprisoned Muslims but of all those confined to carceral settings.
• In “The Construction of Minorities: Self-Determination and the Legal Politics of Religious Difference in Late Northern Nigeria, circa 1949-1960” (Religion, Race and Democracy in Africa, University of Virginia Press – under review), Rabiat Akande (Osgoode Hall Law School of York University) explores an “account of late colonial contestations [that] troubles the narratives of emancipation that undergirded the religious minorities project and the memory of disempowerment that fuelled its rise.”
• In the Journal of the American Oriental Society (143, no. 2 (2023)), Ahmad Atif Ahmad (University of California, Santa Barbara) reviews Hossein Modarressi‘s Text and Interpretation: Imam Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq and His Legacy in Islamic Law (Harvard University Press, 2022).

On Islam and Data Science

• In “The Impact of Islamic Branding on Customer Loyalty with Customer Satisfaction as an Intervening Variable” (in Islamic Sustainable Finance, Law and Innovation (2023)),  Abdul Muizz Abdul Wadud (International Islamic University of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) and Layaman (Institute of IAIN Syekh Nurjati Indonesia, Cirebon, Indonesia) find empirically ” that Islamic branding and customer satisfaction variables affect customer loyalty together.”
• Clerics and jurists in Iran have been considering using artificial intelligence in issuing fatwās, on which one scholar commented that while AI could not replace scholars, it could still help to expedite the issuance of fatwās.
