SCHOLARSHIP ROUNDUP
On Islamic Law:
- In “Maintaining the Plurality and Sacred Value of Islamic Law through the Existence of the Sharia Banking Law” (Al-Ahkam 31, no. 1 (April 2022)), Waldi Nopriansyah (Sekolah Tinggi Ekonomi dan Bisnis Syariah, Indonesia) and others discuss Indonesia’s Sharia Banking Law, finding it to be capacious enough “as a legal product that provides a plurality space so that the law can be enjoyed by all humans and all religions based on community beliefs.”
- In “Domestic Violence: Comparison between Islamic Law and Domestic Violence” (SINOMICS Journal 1, no. 1 (April 2022)), Hanafi (Islamic University of Borneo Muhammad Arsyad Al Banjari Banjarmasin) and others compare Islamic law and Indonesian law’s treatment of domestic violence, finding significant overlaps between the two.
- In “Islamic Law and the Concept of Prophetic-Based Economic Welfare” (BIRCI-Journal: Humanities 5, no. 2 (2022)), Syafruddin Syafruddin and Mukhlishin Mukhlishin elaborate on “the concept of prophetic-based economic welfare,” situating it against “the modern capitalist system which is individualistic.”
On Islam and Data Science:
- In “Modern money and Islamic banking in the light of Islamic law of riba” (International Journal of Finance & Economics, August 24, 2020), Muhammad Zahid Siddique (National University of Sciences and Technology, Pakistan), surveying several monetary and banking systems, concludes that “[r]iba is not merely a matter of eliminating the institution of interest from economic system, it is about eliminating credit-based monetary or financial system because credit creation is as much riba as is charging interest.”
FIELD GUIDE TO ISLAMIC LAW ONLINE: RECENT SOURCES
This Field Guide to Islamic Law Online is an ever-growing collection of links to hundreds of links to primary sources and archival collections around the world, online. We recently added new resources to this list:
- Old Kanebi Islamic Manuscripts “provides an online access to one of the earliest written sub-Saharan languages in manuscript form. Old Kanembu written in Arabic script was a language of Qur’anic interpretation in the ancient Borno Sultanate. It has survived in marginal and interlinear annotations in the early Qur’an manuscripts dating from the 17th to 19th centuries and in various other religious texts dating from the 19th century to 1980’s.”
- Oriental Manuscript Resource (OMAR) “was built at the University of Freiburg (Germany), in cooperation with the Information Technology Center of the University of Tübingen (Germany). The database contains images of approx. 2.500 Arabic manuscripts (in full text, 134.000 images) from Mauritania together with the corresponding bibliographical metadata.”
